From a Poor Farmer to a National Inspiration

Zhang Guimei: The Early Years

Zhang Guimei was born in 1958 in a small village in Guizhou Province, China. Growing up in a poor family, Zhang had to take care of her younger siblings while also attending school. She showed exceptional intelligence and perseverance, and these qualities soon became evident to her teachers as well. In 1980, Zhang was accepted into the Guizhou Normal University, where she studied Chinese and graduated with honors.

Bridging the Education Gap

After graduation, Zhang became a teacher and worked in a rural school in Zunyi, Guizhou. As she saw the low enrollment and high dropout rates among girls, Zhang became determined to do something about it. In 1984, with just 12 students and a few desks, Zhang founded the “No. 1 Children’s Village Primary School”. Over the years, Zhang’s school grew tremendously in both size and reputation. She not only taught the students but also took care of them, providing them with quality education, basic necessities like food and clothing, and a warm home.

Impact and Recognition

Today, Zhang’s school has more than 1,300 students, and has helped over 30,000 students so far. Zhang’s tireless efforts have garnered her numerous awards and recognition from both within China and internationally. In 2016, Zhang was selected as one of the top ten public-interest figures in China. In the same year, she was awarded the prestigious Lui Che Woo Prize for World Civilization, becoming the first Chinese woman to receive this award. Zhang Guimei’s name has become synonymous with education and charity in China, and her story has inspired countless people to make a positive impact on their community.
