Overthepastfewdecades,agrowingnumberofstudieshavebeenconductedtoexaminetheeffectsofmeditationonmentalhealth.Thesestudieshaveyieldedpromisingresults,suggestingthatmeditationcanbeaneffectivetoolforimprovingvariousaspectsofmentalwellbeing.
ReducedSymptomsofAnxietyandDepression
Oneofthemostsignificantbenefitsofregularmeditationpracticeisthereductionofsymptomsassociatedwithanxietyanddepression.Numerousstudieshaveshownthatmindfulnessmeditation,inparticular,canbeeffectiveinreducingsymptomsofbothanxietyanddepression,aswellasincreasingoverallfeelingsofwell-being.
Forexample,a2014studyconductedbyresearchersattheUniversityofExeterintheUKfoundthatMBCT,ormindfulness-basedcognitivetherapy,waseffectiveinpreventingrelapseinpatientswithdepression.Anotherstudy,publishedintheJournalofPsychosomaticMedicinein2013,foundthatmindfulnessmeditationwasassociatedwithreducedsymptomsofanxietyanddepressionamongcancerpatients.
